The Marvel Cinematic Universe is set to face more mischief, drama and time travelling this month, as new Disney+ series Loki is released.
Fans of Marvel will know of Loki already, and his pursuit to become a king. The adopted son of Odin, King of Asgard, will now lead on his own show.
So, who is Loki and what can you expect from the series? This is everything you need to know ahead of the premiere on 9 June.
We want to hear from you: let us know what you think about this story and be part of the debate in our comments section below
Who is Loki?
Tom Hiddleston plays the mischievous adopted son of Odin and brother of Thor, Loki.
He was raised on Asgard after Odin rescued him as a baby from the Frost Giants during a war between the two planets. He was raised to believe he was Odin’s son, making Thor the only person standing between him and the Asgard throne.
He is the most powerful sorcerer in the whole of Asgard, his magical abilities include astral projection, shape-shifting, hypnosis, molecular rearrangement, energy blasts, levitating, conjuration, cryokinesis, telekinesis and teleportation.
Loki can also connect to others telepathically and see into their memories, mystically imbue objects, and create rifts between dimensions.
Loki has earned the title “God of Mischief” as he is always conspiring to become king and rule earth, though does seem to have some loyalty.
Despite his jealousy of the King of Thunder, Thor, they do form allegences when it suits Loki - such as taking revenge on the dark elves for the death of their mother, Frigga.
However, there is one division of values which causes Loki to detray Thor time and time again - Thor is one of the Avengers, Earth’s protectors. Loki wants to rule Earth, as King.
What is the Loki series about?
The Loki series follows on from Avengers: End Game, where Loki returns - seemingly from the dead - to save Thor.
Loki was thought to have been killed by Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War, but the Avengers travel back in time in Endgame to save the Infinity Stones before Thanos gets to them.
As the Avengers arrive back in New York, 2012, Loki is still alive. He takes the Tesseract - and the space stone inside it - before being absconded to another universe.
Therefore, the Disney+ series Loki is likely to be about the other multiverse he has been banished to, and how he impacts Earth while living in a rewritten reality.
Marvel said the series will “follow Loki as the trickster and shape-shifter pops up throughout human history as an unlikely influencer on historical events.”
In December 2020, Marvel boss Kevin Feige said, "As with our other shows coming to Disney+, we wanted to try something a little different, explore a new genre for us at Marvel studios. So we've put Loki at the center of his own crime thriller."
Whether the series is a prequel in which he impacts events before the Avengers series, or does so in real time is yet to be determined.
Who is in the Loki cast?
Tom Hiddleston will return as Loki, supported by Marvel newcomer Owen Wilson as Mobius M. Mobius, a member of the Time Variance Authority (TVA), an organisation that monitors the various timelines of the Multiverse.
Also joining the cast is Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Beauty and the Beast) as Judge Ravonna Renslayer. While this character does not feature in the comics, could she be Ravona Renslayer, aka Terminatrix?
Ravona is known in MCU as the time-travelling former ruler of Chronopolis and an enemy and ally of Kang the Conqueror.
English actress Sophia Di Martino (Flowers, Yesterday) is also in the line up, though her character has yet to be revealed.
Vera actress Wunmi Mosaku will return as Kahina Ziri. She also appeared in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, making her one of the few actresses to appear in both the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the DC Extended Universe.
Award winning actor Richard E. Grant will also join the cast of Loki, it is not known what role he will play. The ‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’ and Doctor Who star has featured in the MCU before, as Dr Rice in James Mangold’s Logan.
When is Loki released on Disney+?
Loki is scheduled to debut on Disney+ on June 9, 2021, releasing weekly on Wednesdays, and will consist of six episodes.
