Amazon offered fans a first glimpse at its highly anticipated Lord Of The Rings series and Benedict Cumberbatch grappled with the multiverse in a new trailer for his latest Marvel outing during last night’s Super Bowl.

They were just two of the trailers for highly-anticipated film and television projects shown off as part of the sporting event’s lucrative commercial breaks.

Each yeah, the Super Bowl brings not just American Football greatness, but a wealth of big-budget advertising campaigns.

Whether trailers for high-profile TV series and films, or big budget ads for crisps starring Hollywood superstars, the commercials are often as enjoyed by fans as the on-field action.

Here is a rundown of the best film and TV trailers shown off as part of Super Bowl LVI.

Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness

Oscar-nominated Cumberbatch will reprise his role of the superhero wizard for Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness, which is due to hit cinemas on 6 May.

Showcasing new footage, the latest trailer features mind bending CGI sequences which see the fabric of reality torn and a tumbling, screaming Strange himself sliced momentarily into cubes.

In other scenes he is flanked by robotic silver guards, while a voiceover promises that his “desecration of reality will not go unpunished”.

Cumberbatch is joined by fellow Marvel Cinematic Universe stars Elizabeth Olsen, who will reprise her role as Wanda Maximoff, Benedict Wong and Rachel McAdams.

The trailer also appeared to tease an appearance by superhero franchise veteran Patrick Stewart, who plays Charles Xavier in the X-men series, whose distinctive voice can be heard.

The Lord Of The Rings: The Rings Of Power

A 60 second advert for the upcoming drama featured a selection of JRR Tolkien’s classic mythical characters including elves, dwarves and orcs.

The multi-season series will be set thousands of years before the events of the world-renowned The Hobbit and The Lord Of The Rings books.

It will focus on a story that unites the major events of Tolkien’s Second Age together – the forging of the famous rings, Amazon said.

“What else is out there?” a voice over is heard to say during the trailer. “There’s wonders in this world beyond our wandering. I can feel it.”

The trailer also features cinematic landscapes including snowy mountain faces, raging seas and dark, mysterious forests.

Moon Knight

A brand new ‘TV spot’ (think a condensed trailer packed into a 30 second commercial) for the upcoming MCU original TV series starring Oscar Isacc and Ethan Hawke was shown.

Though Marvel released a fully-fledged trailer at the end of January, this TV spot gave fans enticing new glimpses of the characters, and has stoked excitement even further.

Moon Knight follows the character of Steven Grant, who, according to Marvel, is “a mild-mannered gift-shop employee who becomes plagued with blackouts and memories of another life”.

The series is expected on Disney Plus at the tail end of March 2022.

Nope

Jordan Peele’s third big-screen horror outing - deliciously titled ‘Nope’ - reunites the writer and director with Get Out star Daniel Daniel Kaluuya.

Kaluuya asks “What’s a bad miracle?” in the sinister two-minute teaser for the forthcoming film.

The 32-year-old British actor stars alongside Steven Yeun and Keke Palmer in the latest feature from Oscar-winning American director Jordan Peele.

The trailer offers viewers a first insight into the narrative, which Peele has kept shrouded in secrecy throughout production.

Centred around the only black-owned horse training company in Hollywood, Kaluuya and his co-stars are terrorised by a mysterious flying object reminiscent of a UFO.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2

Sonic The Hedgehog 2 is a sequel to the 2020 original – which was a box office hit shortly before the pandemic struck, grossing 320 million US dollars (£231 million) worldwide.

The sequel will see the return of Ben Schwartz as Sonic the Hedgehog, Jim Carrey as the villainous Dr Robotnik and James Marsden as sheriff Tom Wachowski.

Luther actor Idris Elba, who recently starred in superhero film The Suicide Squad, is no stranger to lending his voice to animated properties, and will voice the character of Knuckles.

The best of the rest

Other major upcoming blockbusters trailed during the Super Bowl included The Adam Project, Ambulance and Jurassic World: Dominion.

The dinosaur epic, due for release in UK cinemas on 10 June, sees former franchise stars Jeff Goldblum, Laura Dern and Sam Neill team up with Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard.
