Where was The Batman filmed?

Filming for The Batman took just over a year, with production beginning on January 27, 2020, and ending on March 13, 2021.

The primary filming location for The Batman was Liverpool, although parts of London, Glasgow and Chicago were also used to create the new Gotham City.

Parts of the film were also shot in studios in Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire, all finished off with computer-generated visual effects.

Which UK locations were used in The Batman?

Liverpool’s Royal Liver Building served as the Gotham City Police Department and could be seen when Batman had to fight his way out of the GCPD before jumping off the top of the Royal Liver Building and gliding through the streets of Gotham.

St. George’s Hall in Liverpool doubled as Gotham City Hall, and County Sessions House became Gotham Central Court House in the film, whilst Wellington Square in the city was used as The Batman‘s filming location to create what is known as Gotham Square.

In London, the Kingsway Tram Tunnel served as the entrance to the Batcave, and Printworks Nightclub was transformed into the mysterious Iceberg Lounge, home to the Penguin.

The O2 Arena in London was used as Gotham’s answer to Madison Square Garden.

Glasgow’s historic Necropolis features at the end of the film, as Batman and Catwoman are riding through the Victorian cemetery on their motorcycles.

The abandoned Hartwood Psychiatric Hospital building in Shotts, Scotland, was transformed into a Gotham orphanage.

Why was The Batman filmed in the UK?

During an interview director, Matt Reeves revealed that he wanted Gotham to look unrecognisable in the film.

“Let’s say there’s like a Gotham Square, so that’s like Times Square, right, now if we shot it in Times Square, then you’d be like I guess Gotham is New York.

"But in our case, it’s actually going to be Liverpool, and the idea is to go to Liverpool, where there is all the foundation of the Gothic architecture and then add all of the more modern structures through CG.

"But in a way, that when you see the movie, you’ll be like: ‘Hey where’s the city, where did they shoot?’”

He added: “We didn’t want to have Times Square standing in for Gotham Square, so we added skyscrapers and an elevated train to the gothic architecture of Wellington Square in Liverpool, with the idea that you look at it and think, ‘Where is that?’”

How was filming affected by the Covid-19 pandemic?

The release date was shifted multiple times, from June to October 2021 and then March 4, 2022, due to a series of production delays amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

On April 14, 2020, The Batman dialect coach Andrew Jack died of Covid-19 complications and filming was shut down for a short period.

UK based productions resumed in May 2020 with new coronavirus guidelines and restrictions, but filming stopped again in September 2020 after Pattinson tested positive for Covid-19.
