The Summer I Turned Pretty movie: Is it coming out in December? Writer Jenny Han gives update on film release date
Author Jenny Han has given an update on the release of The Summer I Turned Pretty movie.
The writer has excited fans of the hit show by sharing an update on how much progress she's made on writing the eagerly-anticipated movie.
Han has said that she recently finished the script for the feature-length film, which was first announced back in September. “I just wrote it," Jenny said during The Wrap's 2025 Power Women Summit.
That’s the good news. But, it’s not all good news as that’s as far as the project has got so far. "We have not filmed anything yet,” Han added.
The 45-year-old, who also wrote the book trilogy of the same name as well, confirmed that the film will not be released this month. “I know that everyone was hoping that it was coming out this Christmas but unfortunately not happening, not possible,” she said, dashing the hopes of many fans.
Instead, lovers of the show can hope to see an update on what Belly, Conrad and Jeremiah have been up to in 2026, but Han has not commented on when the film may be released. As filming is yet to begin, it is quite possible that it could be 2027 before the movie hits the big screen - or even 2028, depending on the filming schedule and the availability of the actors.
Han has previously teased the plotline for the film, saying there's a major life event coming. “There is another big milestone for Belly,” she hinted during an appearance on Today back in September. “So we’ll continue along with that journey.”
After three seasons and 26 episodes, The Summer I Turned Pretty TV series came to an end back in September. Throughout the show main character Belly (Lola Tung) had been caught in a love-triangle with brothers Conrad (Christopher Briney) and Jerimiah (Gavin Casalegno) Fisher.
Although she got engaged to Jerimiah, in the end Belly ended up with Conrad. He surprised her in Paris at the start the finale and then, in the show’s last moments, the pair returned to Cousins, hand-in-hand, and seemingly about to enjoy their happily ever after.
After the final episode aired, Amazon made a surprise announcement that Belly, Conrad and Jerimiah’s story wouldn’t end there and a film would follow.
The movie will reveal whether or not the couple really will stay together and in love. We’ll let you know when more information is released about the film, including when an official release date is announced.
