From Chad Kroeger to Brody Jenner; is Tyga the latest romance for Avril Lavigne?

The dust may not have settled on the breakup of the engagement, but the internet is already putting two and two together and possibly getting the right answer - as Avril Lavigne was spotted hugging rapper Tyga in public after breaking things off with her fiancee of 12 months, Mod Sun.
The couple were caught hanging out at trendy celebrity hot-stop Nobu in Los Angeles earlier in the week, including eagle-eyed paparazzi catching a picture of the pair hugging - this taking place shortly before the public announcement of the engagement between the Canadian pop-punk princess, 38, and her 35-year-old musician fiance Mod Son, had been called off.

Hide AdInterestingly, both Lavigne and Mod Son attended the Grammy Awards ceremony together earlier this year, but according to friends of the couple who spoke to People, “Avril and Mod Sun have been on and off for the past two months, but are no longer together as a couple.” The consensus regarding the at present amicable split comes as the same insider told People they just worked better by themselves than as a couple.
Those photos however sparked immediate dating rumours, but according to TMZ, Lavigne and Tyga have been friends for several years. Their recent get-together was just two friends catching up and sources have also made clear that there was no third party that came between Lavigne and her ex — the former couple had been facing issues long before her being seen out with Tyga this week.
Whirlwind romances have not been anything new for both Avril Lavigne and the media, including a shock marriage to the lead singer of one of the internet’s most (unfairly) reviled musical acts - Peopleworld takes a look at the former beaus of the Complicated singer.
Deryck Whibley - Sum 41
It was considered a pop-punk relationship akin to a prince and princess getting married; Avril Lavigne had just launched her career with the release of Complicated and Sk8r Boi, while fellow Canadian Deryck Whibley was riding high as the frontman for pop-punk group Sum 41. The images of the couple were spread not only across gossip magazines but metal and alternative music magazines to boot.

Brody Jenner - The Hills
After her divorce from Whibley was finalised in 2010, Lavigne began dating The Hills actor Brody Jenner. The pair were spotted together over two years, however in 2012 Lavigne once again called time on this relationship. The two tweeted at each other after their relationship ended with Jenner writing “Avril has always been there for me and is the closest person to my heart,” while Lavigne responded “luv u 2!!!”
Chad Kroeger - Nickelback
It caused shockwaves throughout the alternative rock community - the lead singer of the constantly reviled Canadian rock act Nickelback and Avril Lavigne? Dating? But the truth was stranger than fiction when Chad Kroeger and Lavigne went public with their relationship in 2012. In an absolutely Hollywood rom-com style meet cute, the pair were working together on Lavigne’s latest album when a romance blossomed between the two.
After one month of dating, the pair got engaged and walked down the aisle at the Château de la Napoule, a reconstructed mediaeval castle on the Mediterranean in the South of France, on July 1, 2013 - the same day as Canada Day.

Hide AdLavigne announced her separation from Kroeger on her official Instagram account in 2015, leading to their eventual divorce. Many music commentators still think this was one big PR campaign - not just for the couple, but for Canadian music as a whole. We’re still of the belief the heart gets what the heart wants. Including Chad Kroeger.
Phillip Sarofim
Business entrepreneur and heir to Texan Billionaire Fayez Sarofim, Phillip Sarofim, started dating Avril Lavigne in 2018. Lavigne had a brief dalliance with music producer J.R. Rotem shortly before she started seeing Sarofim, but the relationship was another short affair for Lavigne.
The couple broke up a year later in 2019, with the reasons from both the couple’s representatives about the difficulty the pair had balancing their work life and careers with their personal lives.
Pete Jonas
An almost “blink and you’ll miss it” relationship that Avril Lavigne had during 2020, the singer started introducing indie musician Pete Jonas to a number of her high-profile friends, and even brought him as her date at the 2020 Grammy awards where the pair were not shy with their public displays of affection.

Mod Son
That brings us to Avril Lavigne’s latest engagement, her third in total, with multi-instrumentalist Mod Son (real name Derek Ryan Smith.) The couple met when Mod Son invited Lavigne to collaborate with him on his 2021 album - subsequently releasing the single Flames that same year. That led to rumours the pair were dating, particularly around the 2022 Grammy awards, however, they went public with their relationship during the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards.
Both Lavigne and Smith revealed their engagement on April 7, 2022, on their respective Instagrams, however, Avril was spotted with the ring in the studio just days earlier on April 5. “Oui! Je t’aime pour toujours,” she captioned her Instagram announcement. “Dimanche. 27. Mars. 2022.” The “Sk8r Boi” singer did not wear the ring at the 64th Annual Grammys, where she presented the award for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance.
The couple called off their engagement earlier this year, once again citing the delicate balance between work and life, along with the previously mentioned “working better apart” line. Quite the series of high-profile engagements indeed for Avril Lavigne (pardon the obvious pun)
