Here’s everything you need to know about The Last Kingdom Series 5.

What is it about?

The Last Kingdom is based on Bernard Cornwell’s series of historical novels The Saxon Stories. They tell the story of Saxon England, and the various political and physical battles that came to define the era.

The official synopsis for series 5 reveals that “Uhtred realises his destiny is more than just Bebbanburg: it is tied to the future of England itself.”

“Charged with training King Edward’s first-born son Aethelstan as a warrior, Uhtred’s ambition will have an even higher purpose. But to achieve this destiny, Uhtred will have to face down his greatest enemy and suffer his greatest loss.”

Who is in the cast?

Alexander Dremon plays Uhtred (formerly Osbert), a Saxon raised by Danes. Dremon is best known for his appearance in The Last Kingdom, but he’s also appeared in Christopher and His Kind and American Horror Story: Coven.

Emily Cox plays Brida, childhood friend and uneasy ally to Uhtred. She’s previously appeared in films The Fatherless and Futuro Beach, as well as an episode of Homeland.

They’re joined by returning cast members Eliza Butterworth (The North Water) as Aelswith, Eva Birthistle (Brooklyn) as Hild, and Mark Rowley (Home Fires) as Finan, amongst others.

New additions this year include Micki Stoltt (Surrogate) as Rognvaldr, Jaakko Ohtonen (Vikings: Valhalla) as Wolland, and Harry Anton (Ransom) as Bresal.

Is there a trailer?

Yes, there is. You can watch it – and all the Norse action it offers – right here.

When and how can I watch it? How can I watch Seasons 1-4?

All ten episodes of The Last Kingdom series 5 will be available to stream at once on Netflix from Wednesday 9 March.

The Last Kingdom (which previously aired on BBC Two) is available in full on Netflix, so you can get Season 1-4 on there currently as well.

Where is The Last Kingdom filmed?

The series is filmed in Hungary.

Is this the final series?

Yes, The Last Kingdom series 5 will be the final full series of the show – however, it was announced last year that there will be a movie to wrap things up afterwards.

The movie, announced in October 2021, will be called Seven Kings Must Die. We don’t know when it’ll be released or who will star, beyond Alexander Dreymon.

How is it connected to Vikings: Valhalla? Does that have anything to do with The Last Kingdom?

The Last Kingdom began on BBC Two in 2015, but moved to Netflix with its third season in 2018.

Somewhat confusingly, though, Netflix recently debuted another series about Vikings – Vikings: Valhalla. That show was a spinoff/sequel to the earlier show Vikings.

So, if you like, Vikings is Star Trek, Vikings: Valhalla is Star Trek: The Next Generation, and The Last Kingdom is Battlestar Galactica.

Or, Vikings is Degrassi, Vikings: Valhalla is Degrassi: Next Class, and The Last Kingdom is The OC.

Did Vikings really have cow horns on their helmets?

No, that’s just a commonly held misconception.
