Against a backdrop of warring English kingdoms and rivalry, which Alfred the Great seeks to unite, Uhtred embarks on an epic journey to reclaim his birthright.

Season five takes place several years after the previous series, when a longstanding period of peace between the Danes and Saxons appears under threat.

King Edward aims to complete the work his father began and finally unite all the Saxon kingdoms, but Saxon rebellion and Danish invasions could wreak havoc on both sides of the North sea.

Promotional shots for the news season show Aelswith looking old and frail, so it is unknown if she will make it to season six.

Another unknown at the time of casting, Butterworth’s include an appearance as Holly in one episode of DCI Banks, and as Hester in miniseries The North Water.

She will also feature in crime series A Town Called Malice, due for release next year.
