Here’s everything you need to know.

What does the image show?

At first glance, the image shows an engagement ring with a large gemstone in the centre.

But, look again and it could look different as the gemstone may not be the same.

That’s because the ring only reveals its true colour if you focus on the image for 30 seconds, and look away for another few seconds and then look at it again.

For it to work though you need to make sure you look at the cross in the centre of the image for 30 seconds before looking away or blinking, and only then will you see the ring change colour – revealing the gemstones and metal of the ring.

So, what can you see when you look at the image below?

How does the optical illusion work?

This illusion is known as a negative afterimage, which affects the way our brains interpret the colours our eyes are seeing.

We have channels in our eyes for black and white, red and green, and blue and yellow. The blue and yellow pair is what makes this optical illusion work.

The cells for blue and yellow focus on the blueish areas of the picture and become overstimulated.

When we then look at a blank background those cells quickly decline, sending out a much weaker signal, and as a result, our brains interpret the signal as the opposite colour when we look back at the image.

The hues of yellow are then added back into the picture, revealing the true colours of the ring and gemstones.

The actual colour of this ring is a ruby red gemstone encased in a rose gold setting.
