Funds raised for 'one-of-a-kind' footballer left in coma after car crash that killed three in South Wales

Nearly £10,000 has been raised for a talented footballer who has been left in a coma after a crash that killed three teenagers. Lucas Vaughan, 19, is fighting for his life in intensive care after the severe crash between a bus and a car.

Jesse Owen, 18, from Tonypandy, Morgan Smith, 18 and from Tonypandy, and Callum Griffiths, 19, from Porth, all lost their lives in the collision in Tonyrefail, in Wales on December 11.

Heartfelt tributes have been left for all those affected near the scene of the crash and at Hendreforgan playing field in Gilfach Goch.

Lucas, who was a passenger, remains critically ill and is receiving treatment at University Hospital of Wales, in Cardiff. The talented young footballer plays for Lydney Town AFC in Gloucestershire, having previously played for Bristol Rovers Academy.

A GoFundMe page has been set up in order to help support the teen, who is from Tonyrefail, and his family. Lisa Martin, a family friend who launched the fundraiser which is now at £9,316, said: "Lucas truly is a one of a kind boy.

"He is the kindest, loving family orientated young man who would do anything for anyone. Most 19 year olds wouldn’t appreciate little sisters very much but him and Emilia-Rose have this unbelievable bond and they idolise each other.

"I know the fundraiser is nearing £10,000 an I’m very proud will be a massive help for Claire but he sustained terrible injuries. I imagine he’s going to be in hospital a very long time and they need all the help they can. If any family deserves the help they do - such a lovely family."

South Wales Police said that their thoughts are with those affected by the 'tragic incident'. They added that trained family liaison officers were currently supporting their families during this 'extremely difficult time'.

In a club statement on X (formerly Twitter) Lydney Town AFC said: "On the eve of Monday, December 11, Lydney Town player Lucas Vaughan was involved in a serious car accident which sadly resulted in three people losing their lives. Lucas sustained life threatening injuries and was taken to Cardiff University Hospital, where he remains in a coma.

"Since joining us, initially on loan and then permanently since leaving Bristol Rovers (Academy) in the summer, Lucas, at only 18, has been a shining light at our club, an incredibly talented footballer but more so, a top top guy with a lovely manner and zest for life.

"We all pray with everything we have for him and his amazing family at such a difficult time. We thank the Hellenic League & Brimscombe & Thrupp for their understanding in rescheduling the scheduled fixture for the evening of the 12th.

"We're all thinking of you, mate."
