AFC Wimbledon vs Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup has been postponed.

Newcastle United’s third round away game in the Carabao Cup at AFC Wimbledon’s Plough Lane has been postponed after an overnight deluge of rainfall caused ‘severe’ flooding in and around the ground.

The flooding has not only rendered the stadium unusable for the time being, it has also caused notable damage to the playing surface - it is unclear when teams will be able to play on it again as things stand. The flooding was caused after the River Wandle, which is nearby, overflowed.

The game was due to kick off at 7:45pm on Tuesday evening - now, due to the recent bout of inclement weather, the game will be rescheduled at a later date. If the damage caused to Plough Lane is significant enough, the game could be played elsewhere to avoid either team accumulating a large fixture pile up at this early stage of the season.

AFC Wimbledon confirmed the postponement with a post on their official X (formerly Twitter) page, in which they wrote: “We regret to inform supporters that due to extensive overnight flooding of the River Wandle and surrounding areas, including at our Cherry Red Records Stadium, Tuesday night’s Carabao Cup third-round fixture against Newcastle United has been postponed.

“More information will follow in due course regarding fixture rearrangement. The stadium is closed until further notice.”

Wimbledon currently sit 5th in League Two, having won four, drawn one and lost one of their opening six league games. Newcastle, on the other hand, are 6th in the Premier League - the Toon have won three, drawn one of lost one so far in the 2024/25 season.

In the previous round, Wimbledon sprung a major upset when they defeated Premier League outfit Ipswich Town on penalties - in the meantime, Newcastle overcame Nottingham Forest, also by way of a penalty shoot out.
