One of football’s worst-kept secrets has hit a surprising fork in the road.

Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold is out of contract at the end of the season, and seems unlikely to remain at Anfield.

He is one of three players whose contracts expire at the Premier League’s full-time whistle, with Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk’s paperwork clock also ticking down. But both players seem set to sign new deals, according to reports.

A number of sources have linked Alexander-Arnold with a move to Real Madrid, who are struggling at right back with Dani Carvajal injured and Lucas Vazquez’s form being inconsistent at best. The Englishman would naturally slot straight into the starting XI, so a winter move was thought to be firmly on the cards.

But El Chiriguito presenter Josep Pedrerol says Alexander-Arnold’s value of over £60m is something the Spanish giants are unwilling to pay.

Posting on X, he said: “Alexander-Arnold has closed an agreement to join Real Madrid in June. There are still some minor details, but if nothing happens, he will play for Real Madrid next season and will arrive on a free transfer.

“There is the possibility that Liverpool will lower their demands [in January] but this seems very difficult because Liverpool are fighting for everything. To let a starting full-back go now would be very complicated.

“Real Madrid are not going to spend €70-80m, which is the figure that Liverpool are considering, for him to arrive now.”
