Tributes paid to Spanish goalkeeper who has died age 34 after illness: "A sad day for football"

The Spanish football world has been left heartbroken following the death of a popular goalkeeper.
On Monday, October 14, SD Logrones goalie Gonzalo Gomez passed away after a battle with a long-term illness, which left him hospitalised in a critical condition. Gomez was 34 years old when he died.
Alongside SD Logrones, Gomez stood between the sticks for Náxara CD and CD Calahorra, with a reputation for helping his teams make deep runs in the Copa Del Rey - the Spanish equivalent of the FA Cup. He also played 35 matches in Division B.
Posting a tribute on social media, a club statement said: “We communicate the sad news of the death of our colleague and friend Gonzalo Gómezgoalkeeping coach and an important part of the club. Sow in memory. Rest in peace.”

Another statement from CD Calahorra added: “Today is a sad day for Rioja football and very particularly for the great red family, because our great goalkeeper Gonzalo has passed away. With great sadness, we send a hug to family and friends.”
After retiring from playing football, Gomez worked with teams throughout La Rioja, helping to train the next generation. It was seen as a fitting move after he came through the community’s youth system himself, playing for the likes of Berceo and Balsamaiso.
