US Open 2022: when is Serena Williams’ next match? Grand Slam ace’s opponent, time and how to watch on TV

Serena Williams announced she would be ‘evolving away’ from the sport of tennis after the conclusion of the US Open 2022.

Many were fearful this would mean little would be seen of her given her recent record on the court since returning from injury earlier this summer.

However, the 23-Grand Slam winner has now reached the third round of her home Grand Slam in a bid to win what would be a record-equalling 24th Slam title.

Margaret Court is the only tennis player in history to have more Grand Slams than the American superstar and Williams now has one last chance to reach that milestone as she prepares to face Ajla Tomljanovic in the third round.

Williams returned after a year out with an injury at Wimbledon 2022 but was quickly beaten by Harmony Tan and has struggled to make it past the first round of any tournament until this point.

When is Serena Williams next playing?

The former world number will play tomorrow, Friday 2 September 2022.

The exact timings and court location of the match are yet to be determined and will be confirmed later on today when the remaining second round matches have taken place.

Who is Serena Williams playing?

The 40-year-old will take on Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic in the third round.

To reach this point, Williams has defeated the second seed of the competition, Anett Kontaveit 7-6(7-4) 2-6 6-2 in the second round and Danka Kovinic 6-3 6-3 in the first.

The Australian 29-year-old, Tomljanovic, beat Karolina Muchova 6-3 7-6(7-5) and Evgenlya Rodina 1-6 6-2 7-5 to reach the third round.

Tomljanovic is currently ranked number 45 in the WTA rankings and has previously reached the fourth round of the French Open as well as twice reaching the Wimbledon quarter-final.

She has four ITF titles to her name as well as three doubles ITF titles.

Who will Serena Williams play next?

If Serena Williams can beat the world number 45, she will face either Ludmilla Samsonova or Aleksandra Krunic.

Samsonova recently defeated the 2021 finalist Leylah Fernandez to reach the third round of the tournament. The Russian won 6-3 7-6(7-3) to set up the meeting with Krunic.

Is Venus Williams playing?

Serena Williams’ sister, Venus, was also competing in the US Open 2022. Venus, 42, was only able to reach the first round of the tournament before losing out to the Belgian world number 46 Alison Van Uytvanck.

Who else is playing in the WTA third round?

There are now no British players left in the women’s tournament of the US Open.

2021 champion Emma Raducanu was defeated in her opening match by the French world number 40 Alize Cornet meanwhile Harriet Dart made it through to the second round before being beaten by Dalma Galfi.

The top seed and world number one Iga Swiatek is through to the third round and is set to face the American Sloane Stephens later on today, Thursday 1 September 2022 on the Arthur Ashe Stadium.
