England recently confirmed their direct entry into the World Cup in Qatar in 2022. The Three Lions’ 10-0 success over microstate San Marino solidified their place at the top of Group I and consequently their place at the tournament next year.

England had an extremely successful qualifying campaign, winning seven out of their nine matches and drawing the other two.

Seventeen players scored a total of 39 goals with Harry Kane scoring seven in the final two matches certifying their place as the second in Europe and the fourth in the World according to their last two tournaments.

Gareth Southgate’s side are not the only ones who have confirmed their presence at the tournament next year with Germany, Denmark, Brazil, Belgium, France, Croatia, Spain, Serbia, Switzerland, Netherlands and of course the hosts Qatar all having secured their places.

Not all countries have confirmed their place at the event with several teams facing another round of playoffs in March next year.

Once the playoffs have been completed, the draw for the World Cup will take place and England will be able to train with their future opponents in mind.

When is the World Cup play off draw?

On 26 November, the teams who have qualified for the play offs will be drawn into three play off paths with one-off semi-finals and finals on 24 March and 29 March respectively.

The three path winners will then qualify for the World Cup.

The six highest-ranked teams, based on the points they earned in their qualifying groups will be seeded, guaranteeing a home tie in the semi-finals while the remaining six remain unseeded.

The World Cup draw will take place in April 2022 following the final playoffs which take place between 24 March and 29 March 2022.

The exact date of the draw is yet to be announced.

How does the draw work?

Once all the 32 nations are confirmed, the teams will be divided into four pots. The hosts, Qatar, will join the top seven sides in the FIFA World Rankings, the second pot will be made up of the next two sides down the rankings and so forth for the next two pots.

The groups will then be drawn ahead of the tournament starting on Monday 21 November 2021.

The group stages of the World Cup will begin on 21 November 2022 and will be played until 2 December 2022.

The Round of 16 takes place between 3 December 2022 and 6 December 2022

The quarter finals will be played on 9 and 10 December 2022.

The semi finals will take place on 13 and 14 December 2022.

The Final will then be played on 18 December 2022.

There will also be a third place play-off game on 17 December 2022.

FIFA has confirmed that the matches will start at 10am, 1pm, 4pm and 7pm GMT for the first round.

The final round of group games and knock-out matches will kick off at 3pm and 7pm GMT while the final is scheduled to kick off at 3pm GMT.
