Garbage frontwoman Shirley Manson has opened up about the challenges of going straight from rocking arenas to using a walking aid after major surgery.

Now 58, the rock superstar had to deal with the operation very publicly because the band were forced to cancel gigs mid-tour while she recuperated.

The music star underwent the first operation in 2023 - five years after she first injured her hip falling off stage at a gig in Los Angeles in 2016 - and she returned for a second surgery the following year after her other hip "collapsed" shortly before the band was due to play a huge show in London - and the singer has admitted the experience was both "depressing" and "wonderful".

She told the Guardian newspaper: "I tumbled into the security barrier. I smashed my hip pretty badly, but it took five years for it to disintegrate ... The physical recovery is surprisingly easy. I mean, there’s a lot of indignity involved. I had to zoom around in a sweat suit with a walker. I’ll leave that image just there; I don’t need to embellish that."

Shirley went on to say of her second surgery: "It’s been very confronting. It makes you question everything, how you want to move forward in your life, particularly as I’m at this late stage in my career. It’s also been really fascinating, though, I’ve got to be honest with you – dark and depressing and soul-crushing, and also kind of wonderful."

The band had to cancel the rest of their 2024 tour so Shirley could recover from her second surgery. In a post on Instagram at the time, she wrote: "I’m choosing to remind myself, as I lie here trying to recover from major surgery, that there are still beautiful things in the world. Animals, flowers, oceans, trees.

"I’m so grateful to all the people who have gone out of their way to love on me, take care of me, check in on me. I cling on to their kindness and their thoughtfulness and their care."

In the interview with the Guardian, Shirley also talked about her mental health issues admitting she has a "healthy psyche" but has suffered bouts of depression and she sees that as totally normal.

She added: "I hate the phrase ‘mental health’, as applied to me. I have a very healthy psyche. I’m pretty tough, mentally. I have definitely suffered from bouts of depression. I see that as a healthy part of existing in the world. I think it’s really necessary. I think all this nonsense about us permanently having to feel ecstatic is silly."
