Top Gear legend Richard Hammond selling four cars at auction including 1979 Ford Escort, 1933 Riley and 1972 MG B GT race car

Top Gear legend Richard Hammond is selling off several cars at auction, including the last vehicle he drove on the BBC motoring show.

Richard Hammond is set to sell off four cars from the Top Gear star’s personal collection. The motors, which are going up for auction range from a 1933 Alpine to a 2006 Mini Cooper.

Going under the hammer with Iconic Auctioneers, the TV presenter’s vehicles, which reflect his broad automotive interests, will appear alongside a catalogue of competition and collectors’ cars at the Collectors’ Car Sale held during the Race Retro Show at Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire on February 21.

Two of Hammond’s vehicles up for auction are closely associated with the TV programme Richard Hammond’s Workshop and DriveTribe. Read on for exactly which cars the diminutive star has decided to part with.

1979 Ford Escort RS2000 Mk2

Offered directly from Richard Hammond, this 1979 Ford Escort RS2000 Mk2 has recently been restored by The Smallest Cog Workshop following its appearance on Richard Hammond’s Workshop. The work included body restoration, a full new interior by Aldridge Trimming, suspension and brake refurbishment, mechanical servicing and a refinish in Ford Midnight Blue.

Supplied new in the UK and supported by an extensive history file, the RS2000 has been used sparingly during Hammond’s ownership, including an appearance at the VSCC Pomeroy Trophy in 2025. A signed Corgi 1:43 scale model will accompany the car. Estimate: £25,000 to £30,000.

1933 Riley 14/6 Alpine Sports Tourer

The Riley 14/6 Alpine Sports Tourer is a rare and correct example of one of the marque’s most respected pre-war models, with only a small number produced. It benefits from a continuous history, period upgrades including triple bronze-bodied carburettors, 10-inch headlamps and a four-speed ‘silent third’ gearbox, and offers genuine four-seat touring capability.

Purchased by Richard Hammond in 2019, the Riley has been used on local roads and maintained in good running order, making it suitable for VSCC events and regular use. Estimate £18,000 to £24,000.

1972 MG B GT race car

This MG B GT race car is Richard Hammond’s personal competition car and the final vehicle he drove during his time on Top Gear. The MG was converted from a road car into a fully prepared competition car during Series 2 of Richard Hammond’s Workshop at The Smallest Cog.

Powered by a Rick Wood Motorsport engine producing 131bhp, the car has completed four seasons of racing between 2022 and 2025 and has recently been checked and prepared for further use. A signed Corgi model linked to the programme will accompany the car. Estimate £15,000 to £20,000.

2006 Mini Cooper S (R53) DriveTribe

Built as a filmed project for DriveTribe and driven by Izzy Hammond, this 2006 Mini Cooper S began life as a £1,500 purchase before extensive development. Following an early engine failure, the car was rebuilt with over £20,000 of parts and now features a Lohen-built 1.8-litre engine producing a dyno-proven 304bhp, along with drivetrain upgrades and a full roll cage.

Known as ‘Stanley’, the Mini has appeared in multiple online videos and was driven at the VSCC Pomeroy Trophy in 2025, giving it clear media and event history. Estimate £10,000 to £15,000.

Rob Hubbard, Managing Director and Principal Auctioneer at Iconic Auctioneers, said: "Richard Hammond is first and foremost a genuine car enthusiast, and this small but varied group of cars reflects that perfectly. From pre-war touring to modern track performance, each example has been selected and prepared with real care."

Bidders wishing to take part in the sale are encouraged to register in advance to bid live online or in person at Race Retro. Viewing will take place in Hall 1 at Stoneleigh Park from Friday 20 February to Sunday 22 February, with the Collectors’ Car Sale held on Saturday 21 February. The auction will also be live streamed on the Iconic Auctioneers website and YouTube.
