Sister Act was one of the most financially successful comedies of the early 1990s.

It grossed $231 million (£206 million) at the box office worldwide, and spawned a 1993 sequel (Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit) and a musical adaptation for the stage, which premiered in 2006.

Now, a third film is in the works, and is set to launch on the Disney+ streaming service at an undisclosed time in the future. Little is known about the mysterious threequel, but we’ve rounded up every bit of information we could find to give you the ultimate rundown.

Here is everything you need to know about Sister Act 3.

Will Whoopie Goldberg return?

Original Sister Act star Whoopie Goldberg was first asked about the possibility of a Sister Act 3 back in 2013, but responded by saying no such film would ever be made, seeing as so many of the original cast had since passed away.

However, a couple of years later, Goldberg’s stance started to soften a little, and she said “it feels like there’s a new generation for Sister Act and so maybe I can be a nun now.”

Two more years after that, in 2017, the actress was fully onboard with the idea, confirming that she would in fact like a third film in the franchise to be made, and that she would like to be the one to direct it.

In December 2018, it was confirmed that writers had been hired to produce a script for Sister Act 3, and Goldberg once again confirmed the film’s existence in an October 2020 interview on The Late Late Show with James Corden.

She said in the appearance that she wanted to bring as many of the original cast back for it as possible, and a few months later it was revealed that Goldberg had officially signed on to return as Delores.

Who will star in it?

In 2021, Deadline reported that Tim Federle (the writer and director of Disney+ series High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, no less) was set to direct the sequel - despite Goldberg previously expressing her wishes to do so.

Since then, no updates on the development of Sister Act 3 have surfaced. That includes casting notes, and at the time of writing, no confirmed cast members have been revealed alongside Goldberg.

The film’s IMDb page does list Wendy Makkena - who played Sister Mary Roberts in the first two films - as confirmed to reprise her role, though it is not certain how accurate this information is.

When can I watch it?

At the time of writing, no official release date has been announced for Sister Act 3.

Though the film seems to have been in pre-production for a number of years now, it doesn’t appear as if any filming has actually taken place as of yet.

“I love the idea of us making this happen but you know, the Hollywood system moves a little slower than I’d like to,” Tyler Perry, who is set as a producer of the film, said in September.

“We’ve got a good script. We’re off to a great start. We’re just trying to get everybody moving in the right direction so we can get it going.”
