Amazon Stargate series: Hit sci-fi franchise set to return to screens as Amazon MGM Studios orders new Prime Video series

Hit sci-fi franchise Stargate is set to make a spectacular return to screens after Amazon MGM Studio ordered a new series of the franchise.

It has been confirmed that the franchise will hit Prime Video in the near future after Amazon MGM bosses greelit the series for a return to screen. Martin Gero, who began his career on the original Stargate series, will serve a showrunner and creator of the new installment.

He said in a statement: “Twenty years ago, my first real job in television was as a Story Editor on ‘Stargate: Atlantis,'. I spent five years at the franchise working across all three series, ‘Stargate’ taught me everything about making television — it’s written into my DNA.

“I’m beyond thrilled that Amazon MGM Studios has entrusted me with guiding this incredible franchise into its next phase. For those who’ve kept the gate active through conventions, rewatches, and unwavering faith — this one’s for you. And for those that are new to our world — I promise you’re in for something extraordinary.”

Gero also confirmed that the new installment will not be a reboot of the series but will instead by “its own unique chapter in the Stargate universe”. Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell will serve as executive producers alongside Gero, with original co-writers Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich also joining the team behind the scenes.

Nick Pepper, Head of US SVOD TV development for Amazon MGM Studios, added: “‘Stargate’ is an enduring, iconic franchise that has captivated audiences for decades with its bold exploration of humanity’s place in the cosmos.

“In partnership with our extraordinary creative team of Martin, Tory, and Joby, we’re honored to open this next gate to bring a visionary new chapter of this beloved franchise to our global Prime Video audience, one that honors the series’ rich legacy while propelling it into an ambitious and emotionally resonant future.”

Stargate is one of the biggest sci-fi franchises on the world. It was initially launched from the 1994 feature film ‘Stargate’, and went on to spawn various television spin-off shows such as Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis, and Stargate Universe. The media franchise also grew into novels, web series, comics and video games.

Consulting producer Brad Wright said in the announcement video: “We’re going to be able to do things that we couldn’t do in 1997. I strongly feel that fans will watch this show and say ‘This is Stargate’.”

Consulting producer Joe Mallozzi added: “In a 25 year span, their enthusiasm for Stargate has never waned.”

Avid fans have welcomed the return of the franchise, which comes following Amazon acquiring MGM Studios. The newly former Amazon MGM Studios has already committed to plans for other MGM titles to make a return, including the James Bond franchise, Legally Blonde, and Tomb Raider among many others.

A release date has not yet been confirmed for the new series, which will air on Amazon’s streaming platform Prime Video.
