Wayne Rooney has spent most of his adult life in the spotlight.
He became a teenage sensation on the pitch for boyhood club Everton before a big money move to Manchester United.
A string of dazzling displays for England at the Euros 2004 saw him lauded as a national icon and the country’s next big hope.
Off the pitch, though, was a different story with Rooney’s private life and social exploits often making front page news.
In this special - titled ‘Rooney’ - the viewer gets a rare glimpse into his and his family’s life, with some famous guests interviewed.
Here’s all you need to know about the new Wayne Rooney documentary, when it is out and how to watch it for free...
When is the Wayne Rooney documentary out?
The new Wayne Rooney documentary, titled ‘Rooney’ will be out in February 2022.
An official UK release date on Amazon Prime Video has been confirmed for Friday 11 February 2022.
What is the Wayne Rooney documentary about?
Wayne Rooney talks openly about the highs and lows in his life from childhood through to the start of his managerial career.
The current Derby County manager goes into the depths of his personal "mistakes", from drinking binges to his relationship with wife Coleen.
Speaking about ‘Rooney’ the documentary, the now 36 year old said: "I wanted to be honest and touch on everything that has happened in my life, which is important.
"If I do it and I am not honest or I don’t speak about things it wouldn’t be real, so it was about me coming out and people seeing me and my family for who we are and not what is being portrayed of us as a family.
"I want people to have a better understanding of me as a person really. Throughout a young sportsperson’s life they go through difficult periods and there is a lot of me talking about moments where I was really down, I didn’t want to be around anyone."
In a later interview with BBC Breakfast’s Sally Nugent, Rooney spoke about how he feared "death" in his darkest times, that he knew he needed help to save himself and his family, and how he didn’t feel comfortable speaking out 10-15 years ago.
Who features in the Wayne Rooney documentary?
As well as Wayne Rooney himself, wife Coleen, his father and close family members all feature in the new documentary.
There are a range of testimonials from former football colleagues and teammates, including David Beckham, Gary Neville, Rio Ferdinand and Thierry Henry.
David Moyes, Rooney’s first Premier League manager at Everton, and Sven-Göran Eriksson, his first England manager, are both interviewed in the documentary.
