Denise Welch, 64, has sparked debate online after she took to Twitter to speak about the cancellation of events due to the mourning period of Queen Elizabeth II.

The Loose Women panellist previously blasted the decision to cancel the Great North Run, and now she’s continued by talking about her friend being forced to cancel a charity event that she was involved with.

This comes after the death of the nation’s longest-reigning monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, who peacefully died at Balmoral Castle, on Thursday, 8 September 2022.

Charles was then proclaimed King, and the nation entered a 10-day mourning period, leading up to the monarch’s funeral, taking place on Monday, 19 September.

Following the announcement on Thursday, public and private events, such as music concerts and sports events have all been called off in a mark of respect for the former monarch.

Although the former Coronation Street star paid her respects to the Royal Family after the sad news broke, she was also quick to express her frustrations.

Denise then went on to claim the late monarch would not have wanted events to be cancelled, especially due to the current economic climate.

She tweeted: “Why on earth would cancelling the Great North Run be in memory of the Queen???

“The Queen would NEVER want these events cancelled at this financially crippling time in people’s lives!!”

In a follow-up tweet, she continued: “Instead of cancelling events that take a year of blood, sweat and tears to organise, we should be celebrating the Queen’s AMAZING life & legacy AT these events!!!!”

“Stop cancelling things,” she added.

The series of tweets, sparked criticism as well as praise amongst social media users, some accused the TV personality as disrespectful, whereas others agreed it was causing further issues for them.

One Twitter user wrote:“For once I totally agree with Denise Welch. This cancelling event’s nonsense is ridiculous and threatens to overshadow things.”

Another chimed in: “Well said Denise, businesses need the income!”

However, it sparked a debate as not everyone agreed with Denise’s views on the matter, one tweeter wrote: How often do we lose a cherished monarch? Bloody hell Den, try to understand the gravitas of the situation.”

Whilst another wrote: “For once in your life why not keep your thoughts to yourself and be respectful to our Queen!”

One detail of her speech was quickly cleared up by followers as they informed the Loose Women panellist that the Great North Run wasn’t cancelled.

Instead the event went ahead, at the weekend and paid tribute to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, with “a moment of reflection,” a minute’s silence and national anthem played before the race.

The nation is currently in a 10-day mourning period, with the late monarch’s state funeral set to take place on Monday 19 September, with a bank holiday also declared.
