An ‘amazing, kind and strong’ mum, Devon Leigh, died aged 31 due to complications after “necessary medical treatment” for rare type of cancer.

An “amazing, kind and strong” mother of two died following a battle with cancer. Devon Leigh is reported to have passed away following complications from her treatment for acute lymphoblastic leukaemia - a rare type of cancer affecting white blood cells in the bone marrow, causing tiredness, pale skin, fever, bruising and recurring infections.

Devon was diagnosed in 2022 and after undergoing various treatments over the course of two years, the 31-year-old finally succumbed to the disease after being readmitted to hospital following a stem cell transplant having developed the potentially serious condition graft versus host disease (GvHD).

At a GP appointment, Devon was immediately sent for blood tests before being given the devastating diagnosis. She began receiving targeted chemotherapy at The Christie hospital, but it was discovered she had a rare PH variant of the illness and would need a stem cell transplant.

Sadly, she developed GvHD - where donated cells attack the body's own cells - and was readmitted to hospital before battling recurrent infections over the following nine months, including three stays in intensive care. After catching another infection, she sadly passed away surrounded by loved ones.

An inquest at Manchester Coroners' Court on January 14, attended by Manchester Evening News, found that the “necessary medical treatment” had contributed to her death. The cause of death was given as post-transplant thrombotic angiopathy, GvHD and acute lymphoblastic leukaemia, with "recurrent infections" being an underlying factor.

Following her death, one of Devon’s best friends, Kirsty Chambers, said: “After being diagnosed with leukaemia in February 2022, she underwent many treatments and had many hospital stays, losing valuable time with her family. She sadly passed away on June 4, 2024 after being in hospital since September 2023.”

Kirsty set up a GoFundMe page shortly afterwards to raise money for the funeral saying they wanted her “to have the best of the best”. She said: “Myself and Heather had the absolute honour of being best friends to Devon and we would like to support the family in any way we can which is why we have set up this page.

“Devon deserves the best and if possible we would like to take away some of the worry for the family and help raise as much as we possibly can to ease the stress and worry at such a sad time. As you may not be aware, it is all very costly and we want her to have the best of the best.”

The total amount raised came to £7,779. In the post, Kirsty also mentioned Devon’s “two beautiful little girls”. She said: “The girls are just like their Mummy.. Amazing, Kind and Strong.”
