Iconic British designer Bella Freud introduces Glamorama, her first beauty collection, featuring lip oils, hand care, hair accessories and a mood-enhancing fragrance spray, available exclusively at Boots.
Bella Freud, renowned for her witty slogan jumpers that defined early 2000s British fashion, is stepping into the beauty world for the first time with a new collection at Boots.
The Glamorama range, available exclusively at the big beauty retailer, includes lip oils, hand care products, hair accessories, a compact mirror and a unique fragrance spray designed to enhance mood.
This marks a significant expansion for Freud, aged 65, who has built her reputation over more than 30 years on playful, language-driven fashion. Following her recent high-street collaboration with Marks and Spencer, which made her knitwear more accessible, Freud now brings her distinctive style to personal care.
Glamorama’s name reflects the idea of donning a "glamour armour" to face the day, with packaging featuring Freud’s characteristic use of words and phrases. Unlike many beauty lines focused on concealing imperfections, Freud deliberately avoids products like concealer or foundation. She embraces natural features, such as the mole above her lip, which she describes as a personal “flaw” she values.
“You know, I like it and I never notice it. And the only people that comment on it are babies, and they always point and look at me – like two-year-olds – and their mothers look just mortified. And then every time I look in the mirror, it’s there, but if it disappeared, I’d be really worried,” Freud told the Press Association. She recalled a 1990s photo shoot where the mole was airbrushed out, an alteration she found unsettling.
The collection, which is available to buy now, draws inspiration from Freud’s earliest memories of makeup, particularly her mother’s minimal use of kohl eyeliner. Freud developed her own signature eye pencil technique at school, which she still associates with her youthful self and mood.
Central to Glamorama is the concept of beauty as a mood enhancer. This is embodied in the collection’s standout product, ‘Transference’ – a mood spray named after a psychoanalytic term. Freud conceived the idea during lockdown, aiming to create a small ritual to combat moments of self-doubt that often arise when preparing to face the world.
“[Transference] has a fragrance, but it was in lockdown when I was thinking I want to invent something that you reach for when you’re looking in the mirror and you’re, in theory, going out, and you think, ‘Oh, I don’t want to go out. I hate the world. I hate myself. Who am I?’ You know, you have this really quick collapse of self-doubt. It really takes over.
“And I thought, if you could just have something that you spray on, that it’s not really about almost what’s in it, but it’s a gesture, you reach for something, you ask for help in a way just from this little thing, and it reminds you that you you can get yourself out of this place,” Freud explained.
The fragrance is inspired by Freud’s childhood experiences in Morocco, incorporating orange flower to evoke feelings of lightness and uplift. She emphasises the scent’s personal significance rather than treating it as a purely experimental creation.
With Glamorama, Freud translates her signature use of language and identity into beauty products designed to influence how people feel as much as how they look.
The collection is available to buy online now, with prices starting at £12.
