The ear-worn Nurosym device targets a branch of the vagus nerve, with its developer pointing to research into anxiety symptoms, fatigue and markers of inflammation.

This unusual earpiece delivers gentle electrical impulses to a branch of a nerve through your outer ear - and its developer claims it can improve anxiety symptoms, fatigue, and markers of inflammation.

Nurosym is a non-invasive device delivers controlled electrical stimulation, without surgery or an implanted device, aimed at the vagus nerve.

This nerve carries signals between the brain and organs around the body, and it plays a role in functions including heart rate, digestion and the response to stress.

It's also involved in the parasympathetic nervous system, often described as the body’s “rest and digest” system. A branch of the vagus nerve can be accessed through the outer ear, which is where Nurosym delivers its stimulation.

Developer Parasym says Nurosym and its underlying technology have been studied in more than 60 completed clinical studies, including placebo-controlled trials.

Among the findings were reductions in anxiety symptoms and fatigue, alongside improvements in sleep quality. There has also been research measuring changes in markers of inflammation.

Nurosym’s own website says the device is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent disease, and should not replace professional medical guidance.

But users have reported improved mood, reduced stress, better sleep, and even relief from gastrointestinal symptoms and persistent pain.
