Bob Simpson: Australian cricket legend dies aged 89 as fans and players pay tribute to ex-captain and 'era-defining' coach
Australian cricket legend Bob Simpson has died at the age of 89 as tribute pour in from the sport.
Simpson’s death was announced in the early hours of Saturday morning (August 16). His cause of death is currently unknown.
The legendary cricketer captained his country from 1963/64 until 1967/68 and again in 1977/78. He later coached the Baggy Greens from 1986 until 1996, overseeing the country’s rise in success.

Cricket Australia released a statement following news of Simpson’s death. Chair Mike Baird said: "Bob Simpson was one of the greats of Australian cricket and this is a sad day for anyone fortunate to have watched him play or who benefited from his wisdom. As a brilliant opening batter, incredible slips fielder and handy spin bowler, Bob was a mainstay of a very strong Australian team in the 1960s, and he became a leader across the game as Australian and New South Wales captain and as a coach.
"Bob's decision to come out of retirement to successfully lead the Australian team during the advent of World Series Cricket in 1977 was a wonderful service to the game, and his coaching set the foundation for a golden generation for Australian cricket. On behalf of Cricket Australia, I would like to express my warmest condolences to Bob's family, friends, teammates and all those touched by his vast contribution to cricket.”

A minute silence was held at Australia’s T20 match against South Africa on Saturday, with players wearing black armbands during the match. Tributes were paid to the sports star on social media.
One fan said: “A true giant of the game. His contribution to Australian cricket will always be remembered and cherished. Rest in peace, Bob Simpson.”
Another added: “His hard work in the 80’s as coach turned the Australian cricket team into what it became. Competitive in all forms. RIP Bob Simpson.”
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese also paid tribute to Simpson, saying on X (formerly Twitter): “Bob Simpson’s extraordinary service to Australian cricket spanned generations.
“As a player, captain and then era-defining coach, he set the highest of standards for himself and the champions he led. He will be long remembered by the game he loved. May he rest in peace.”
