You may not think of Coventry as being on your radar to visit - but the city has a lot to offer being the home of two-tone music and where famous faces were born.

My home is well-known for either the Blitz, being home to two-tone music, the Specials, or, of course Coventry City football team. But, the city has a lot more to offer with a lot of historical and cultural attractions to see.

The city is pretty much in the centre of England, next door to Birmingham. It was bombed many times during the Second World War in which our Cathedral, now called the Old Cathedral, was obliterated. The ruins of the Cathedral still stand today and you can take a look around with it being free to visitors. I’d say it is a must-see attraction when visiting Coventry.

Beside the ruins of the Old Cathedral is also the New Cathedral, a striking modern building that was consecrated in 1962. The New Cathedral was designed by Sir Basil Spence, who was later knighted for his work. He was clear from the start that the old cathedral should be retained, to act as a garden of remembrance, and should be linked to the new structure. The two buildings side by side is quite impressive and a sight to behold. There is a charge for visiting the New Cathedral but it is beautiful inside.

Coventry actually has three cathedrals which not many cities have, and from a spot near my house you can see the three spires. Hence the ‘You want a cathedral, we've got one to spare’ Coventry City chant.

In new research, Coventry came out on top for 'hidden gems' in the UK with the city having the highest percentage of attractions. The highest-rated hidden gem attraction in Coventry is the Coventry Music Museum which celebrates music from Coventry and Warwickshire in all its forms, going back to the Roman occupation.

The museum is famously known for its two-tone exhibition as famous bands including The Specials and The Selecter are from Coventry. It is a great museum filled with memorabilia, photo booths and exhibits - perfect for music lovers.

Coventry was also the heart of Britain’s car manufacturing industry in the twentieth century so if you are a lover of cars you can visit the Coventry Transport Museum - where the city’s motor heritage is celebrated in all its glory. Other attractions to visit in Coventry town is the famous Lady Godiva statue which sits right in the middle (famously referenced to in Queen’s Don’t Stop Me Now), and St Mary's Guildhall which was ranked among the best places to visit on Tripadvisor for a second year running.

BBC drama This Town was partly set in Coventry with Coventry Cathedral used for a scene as well as Spon End estate and Bell Green Social Club, in Roseberry Ave. So if you are a fan of the series you can scout these places out!

Alongside historical and cultural attractions there are nice walks to enjoy in the city. You can take a stroll around War Memorial Park (which hosts a park run every Saturday morning) or you can take a walk around Coombe Abbey where you can also enjoy an afternoon tea. Coombe Abbey is a historic four-star hotel with beautiful grounds to walk around.

It currently hosts GoApe, a treetop rope course, which is a fun activity to do with friends, your partner or family. Also this Christmas the Luminate Winter Light Trail will be on at the Park - I went last year and it was lovely with the twinkling lights in the forest. If you are heading to Coventry in the coming months keep this in mind as something to do!

As for pubs, restaurants, and bars there are an array to choose from. In the city centre there is a Las Iguanas, Cosy Club, Slug and Lettuce, Zizzi’s, Turtle Bay and more, with The Botanist also a great option for drinks. Irish pub the Four Provinces is always full of life on a Friday and Saturday night as well as Spon Gate - and if you are heading for a night out, well, the legendary Kasbah is the one to head to.

Coventry is a city worth visiting from being home of two-tone music to also being the home of famous faces The Enemy, Jay1, and Hollywood actor Clive Owen (who was actually in my Dad’s tutor group at Binley Park School). Have a visit and sing along to ‘We’ll Live and Die In These Towns’ to your heart’s content.
