Newark, Newark, a new sitcom about a fish and chip shop, is coming to Gold on Monday 28 March.

The comedy stars Morgana Robinson and Matthew Horne amongst others, and was written by Nathan Foad, inspired by his own experiences growing up in Newark (not that one).

What is Newark Newark about?

The official synopsis for Newark Newark reveals that “follows pugnacious chip shop manager and exhausted matriarch, Maxine, as she tries to ride out her divorce and find someone who actually lights her fire.”

Her son comes out as gay and her ex-husband tries to win her back in this series that hopes to “capture the goofy, sticky oddness of long English summers and the joyous, comforting and somewhat ridiculous things that go on in a small town.”

Who stars in the cast of Newark Newark?

Morgana Robinson stars as fish-and-chip shop owner Maxine. Robinson is best known as an impressionist and writer, having produced several iterations of her own sketch show, and recently competed as a Taskmaster contestant.

She’s joined by Matthew Horne, who stars as Maxine’s ex-husband Terry. Horne is best known for his leading role in Gavin and Stacey, and can currently be seen starring in Catherine Tate’s Nan: The Movie.

The rest of the cast includes Beverly Callard (Coronation Street), Nina Wadia (The Outlaws), Jai Hollis (Ackley Bridge), and Jessie Mae Alonzo (Rebel Cheer Squad) amongst others.

The series was written by Nathan Foad, who recently appeared in the Sky paramedic sitcom Bloods. Foad will also appear in Newark Newark in a supporting role.

Newark Newark begins on Gold on Monday 28 March at 9pm.

The second episode airs on Tuesday 29 March at 9pm, with the third episode following on Wednesday 30 March again at 9pm.

You’ll no doubt be surprised to learn that Newark Newark was filmed in and around Newark, a small market town situated on the River Trent just outside Nottinghamshire.

The series filmed in March 2021, almost a year ago.
