In the background, golf has been undergoing a huge schism, with the controversial new LIV Super League on the rise, seeing an increasing number of players chosing to leave the PGA Tour in favour of the Saudi-backed golf league.

The recent conflicts also mean that those who are part of the LIV Super League will also not be available to compete in the Presidents Cup.

The international team had been relying on the Open winner Cameron Smith to help boost their hopes, but after recently joining the LIV Tour he will now no longer be available.

Team USA will look to defend their Presidents Cup just under 12 months after their win over the Europeans in the Ryder Cup.

Speaking of his disappointment at missing out on the Presidents Cup, Oosthuizen said: “There’s no rule that says I need to be a PGA Tour member to play the Presidents Cup, especially as an International team player.

“I didn’t think I did anything wrong. I made my decision where I am playing golf. But I didn’t do anything wrong while I was a PGA Tour member.”
